B2B buyers increasingly ask ChatGPT and its rivals which tool to buy. SaaS SEO now means being in that answer, and knowing which sources put your competitors there instead.
Updated
SEO for SaaS companies used to be a keyword game: rank for the category, rank for the comparisons. The comparisons still matter, but more of them now happen inside an AI answer that names three tools and not the other ten. This page covers what buyers do, what AI cites, and a B2B SaaS SEO strategy built around the shortlist.
Key takeaways
151% of B2B software buyers in G2's 2026 survey start research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google.
2AI chatbots were the top source shaping shortlists in that survey, ahead of review sites and vendor websites.
3Buyers still check: 94% of AI users in TrustRadius' survey fact-check its answers at least some of the time.
4Win the shortlist questions: comparisons, alternatives, pricing, reviews and integrations.

G2 surveyed 1,076 B2B software buyers in March 2026[1]; G2 sells review-site visibility, so weigh its findings on review sites accordingly. TrustRadius surveyed buyers in January 2026[3].
How B2B buyers use AI to choose software
The shift has been fast. In G2’s April 2025 survey, 29% of buyers said they started research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google; a year later it was 51%. G2 found AI chatbots were “the top source influencing buyer shortlists, ahead of review sites, analyst firms, and vendor websites”, and that 69% chose a different vendor than they had planned because of chatbot guidance[2]. Forrester’s 2026 report likewise says generative AI searches are the starting point for B2B buyers, while warning that AI tools often deliver incomplete or unreliable information[4].

Check your shortlist coverage
A buyer rarely asks “tell me about Acme”. They ask for the best tool for a job, for alternatives to a competitor, or how two tools compare. Each question has a page that answers it, on your site or someone else’s. Tick the ones you already answer well:

Build next
1. Coverage in independent 'best of' lists and a use-case page of your own
2. Up-to-date profiles with recent reviews on the major review sites
3. An honest comparison page for each main competitor
4. An alternatives page that says who each option suits
The weighting is our editorial judgement, not a measured model: questions nearest to a purchase, and review-site coverage, which buyers in G2’s 2026 survey said they trust most in AI answers, count most.
Review sites, and what they are worth
Buyers say review sites matter: 45% in G2’s survey called review-site citations the most confidence-inspiring signal in an AI answer[1], and 74% in TrustRadius’ survey use reviews to inform purchases[3]. The effect on AI citations is real but modest. An analysis of 30,000 AI citations, published by G2, found a 10% increase in reviews correlated with about a 2% increase in citations, with reviews explaining less than 2% of the variation[5].
What this means in practice
Keep review profiles current and ask happy customers for reviews, but do not expect reviews alone to put you on the shortlist. The comparison articles, forums and your own pages that answer shortlist questions carry more of the weight.
A SaaS SEO strategy for the AI shortlist
B2B SaaS SEO, in order
Find the shortlist questions
The 'best', 'vs', 'alternatives' and 'pricing' questions buyers in your category ask.
Step 1: Find the shortlist questions. The 'best', 'vs', 'alternatives' and 'pricing' questions buyers in your category ask.
Step 2: See who AI names. Run those questions through the AI assistants and record who is named and which sources are cited.
Step 3: Answer on your site. Honest comparison and alternatives pages, public pricing, integrations and use cases.
Step 4: Get into the sources. Reviews, the 'best of' articles and the communities AI cites for your category.
Step 5: Track it weekly. Answers vary. Judge progress over weeks, not one check.
Myth
Our own blog content will get us recommended.
What is true
AI shortlists lean on comparisons, reviews and independent articles as much as vendor pages.
Myth
Hiding pricing makes buyers call sales.
What is true
Transparent pricing has topped TrustRadius buyers' wish list four years running.
Myth
More G2 reviews will fix AI visibility.
What is true
The correlation is small. Reviews help; they are not the whole answer.
CoreCited was built for this: AI visibility tracking runs your category’s buyer questions weekly across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI features; competitor tracking shows share of voice with honest ranges; and citation analysis lists the sources that name competitors and not you. We compare ourselves with the alternatives on the best AI visibility tools, including our own weaknesses.
Questions SaaS teams ask
What is SaaS SEO?+
SEO for software companies: ranking for the problems your product solves, the categories it belongs to, and the comparisons buyers make. In 2026 it also means being named when buyers ask AI assistants for a shortlist, which depends heavily on review sites, comparison articles and how clearly your own pages answer buyers' questions.
How are B2B buyers using AI to choose software?+
In G2's 2026 survey of 1,076 buyers, 51% said they now start research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google, up from 29% a year earlier, and AI chatbots were the top source shaping shortlists. TrustRadius found 63% used AI in their purchase journey, and 94% of those fact-check its answers at least some of the time.
What pages should a SaaS company have for AI search?+
Pages that answer shortlist questions directly: honest comparisons with named competitors, alternatives pages, a public pricing page, an integrations page, and use-case pages for the segments you serve. Off your site, up-to-date review-site profiles matter as much.
Do reviews on G2 or Capterra help AI visibility?+
They help, modestly. In an analysis published by G2, a 10% increase in reviews correlated with about a 2% increase in AI citations, and reviews explained less than 2% of the variation. Buyers in G2's survey said review-site citations were the most confidence-inspiring signal in an AI answer.
What is a good SaaS SEO strategy for 2026?+
Cover the shortlist questions first (comparisons, alternatives, pricing, reviews), then the jobs your product does. Make every page answer its question in the first lines. Track whether AI assistants name you for your category's questions, and which sources they cite when they name competitors instead.
