Reddit SEO used to mean ranking a thread in Google. Now it mostly means this: when someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity which product to buy, the answer often leans on Reddit. This guide covers why, what Reddit’s own rules allow, and a Reddit marketing strategy that earns mentions instead of getting banned for chasing them.

Key takeaways
1Reddit was the most-cited website in both ChatGPT and Perplexity in Ahrefs' September 2026 data.
2Google and OpenAI both signed data partnerships with Reddit in 2024. Reddit says its content is used for grounding.
3Reddit's rules ask for authentic participation, and its spam policy speaks directly to business self-promotion.
4You cannot write the threads AI reads. You can be the helpful person in them, openly.

Why AI cites Reddit

In Ahrefs’ September 2026 data on US queries, Reddit was the most-cited website in ChatGPT, with 16.8% of citations[1], and in Perplexity, with 21.6%[2]. The reason is not mysterious: people ask AI the questions they used to ask each other, and Reddit is where those answers were written down, first-hand and argued over.

The share moves
Semrush tracked ChatGPT citing Reddit in about 60% of responses in early August 2025 and about 10% by mid-September, a drop it saw only in ChatGPT[3]. Different studies also measure different things. Treat Reddit’s weight as large and changeable, not fixed.

Reddit’s own traffic from search is less steady than it was: its Q2 2026 letter called search referrals “choppy”[10], and the earnings call pointed to a decline in them[11]. People increasingly search Reddit directly: over 80 million a week in Q4 2025, up from 60 million a year earlier[12].

What Reddit’s rules allow

Reddit’s Content Policy asks users to “participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest, and do not spam or engage in disruptive behaviors (including content manipulation)”, and to “be authentic” rather than mislead or impersonate[7]. Its spam policy speaks to businesses directly: “If your contributions to Reddit consist primarily of links to a business that you run, own, or otherwise benefit from, please be thoughtful about the frequency of posting, or consider advertising opportunities”. Moderators decide what counts as spam in their communities[8].

Reddiquette, which describes itself as informal, adds a rule of thumb: “only 1 out of every 10 of your submissions should be your own content”[9].

A Reddit SEO strategy that lasts

Taking part the way Reddit's rules expect
Find the threads AI reads
Look at which Reddit threads AI answers cite for your buyers' questions. Those are the conversations that matter.

Step 2: Read before you write. Each subreddit has its own rules in its sidebar. Some ban vendors outright.
Step 3: Use a real, disclosed account. Say who you are and where you work. Undisclosed self-promotion is what gets accounts banned.
Step 4: Answer the question. Help first. Mention your product only where it genuinely answers what was asked.
Step 5: Keep the ratio. Most of what you post should not be about your own thing.
Myth
A few upvoted comments will get us into ChatGPT.
What is true
AI reads whole threads. A planted comment in a thread that distrusts it hurts more than it helps.
Myth
Reddit marketing means posting our links.
What is true
Reddit's spam policy points businesses that mostly post their own links to advertising instead.
Myth
Anonymous accounts are safer.
What is true
Reddit's rules ask for authenticity. Disclosure protects you when someone asks who you are.

For B2B brands, the same rules apply to Reddit B2B marketing: the subreddits where practitioners compare tools are exactly the threads AI reads when a buyer asks for a recommendation. If you would rather reach Reddit users directly, Reddit sells advertising, which its own spam policy recommends for businesses.

Measuring Reddit’s effect on AI visibility

The question is not how many comments you posted but whether the threads AI cites mention you. Citation analysis in CoreCited shows which Reddit threads, among other sources, AI engines cite for your buyers’ questions, and which of them name competitors and not you. Questions people ask

Does Reddit help SEO?

Reddit threads rank in Google and are among the sources AI assistants cite most: Reddit was the most-cited website in both ChatGPT and Perplexity in Ahrefs' September 2026 data. Being discussed in the threads your buyers read helps your visibility, but links from Reddit themselves are not the point.

Why does ChatGPT cite Reddit so much?

Reddit is full of first-hand discussion of products and problems, which is what many questions ask about, and OpenAI has had a partnership with Reddit since May 2024 that brings Reddit content to ChatGPT. The share moves: Semrush saw ChatGPT's Reddit citations fall sharply in September 2025.

Can I promote my business on Reddit?

Carefully. Reddit's rules ask you to participate authentically and not spam, and its spam policy says that if your contributions are mostly links to a business you run or benefit from, you should think about how often you post or use Reddit's advertising instead. Each subreddit also sets its own rules.

What is the 9:1 rule on Reddit?

A rule of thumb from Reddiquette: only one out of every ten of your submissions should be your own content. Reddiquette describes itself as informal guidance rather than an official rule, but moderators often apply the same idea.

Is it worth paying for Reddit comments or upvotes?

No. Reddit's rules forbid content manipulation, accounts that do it get banned, and a thread exposed as astroturfed does lasting damage to a brand. The same content that AI reads is read by people who can tell.
