How often Google shows AI Overviews
Google publishes no figure, so every number comes from a third party tracking its own keyword set[5]. They disagree widely, and the reasons are the keyword mix, the country, the device and the month.
Check any search query against Google’s live results: whether an AI Overview appears, what it says, which pages it cites, and whether your site is one of them.

Sources: Semrush[2], Ahrefs[1], seoClarity[4], Conductor[3], and the July 2026 vendor figures as reported[5].
Ahrefs’ study of 146 million US desktop results found AI Overviews on 20.5% of them overall, but on 57.9% of question queries and 46.4% of queries seven words or longer, against 9.5% of one-word queries. The shopping category had the lowest share, at 3.2%[1]. So the questions your buyers type in full sentences are the ones most likely to be answered for them.
Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet[6]. Its newer guide to generative AI features also says a site must be included in the Search generative AI features setting in Search Console to be eligible[7], so check that setting if you have never looked at it.
On ranking: in Ahrefs’ early-2026 study of 863,000 keywords, 38% of pages cited in AI Overviews ranked in the top ten for the same query, and the rest came from further down or beyond position 100[8].
The guide to Google AI Overviews covers how sources are chosen, and the AI Mode guide covers the conversational version. To check the page itself, use the AI SEO Checker.
Search it in Google, or use the checker on this page, which fetches Google's live results for the query in the country you choose and shows whether an AI Overview appeared, what it said and which pages it cited. The result can change from one day to the next for the same query.
Google does not publish a figure, and third-party studies disagree: Ahrefs found AI Overviews on 20.5% of 146 million US desktop results in September 2025, Semrush reported 15.69% in November 2025, and vendors quoted figures of about 43% to 48% in July 2026. The answer depends on the keyword set, the country and the month.
Google decides per search whether an AI Overview is helpful, and that decision changes. Conductor measured AI Overview coverage on its keyword set nearly doubling from 23% to 47% between September 2025 and January 2026, then falling to 34% a month later.
Google says there are no special requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. In practice, pages that answer the question directly, rank reasonably for it and are crawlable get cited more often. Check which sources Google cites today, and what they do that your page does not.
Longer, question-style queries. In Ahrefs' data, AI Overviews appeared on 57.9% of question queries and 46.4% of queries of seven words or more, against 9.5% of one-word queries and 3.2% in the shopping category.
Yes, with limits: a few new queries per hour, and a daily cap across all users, because each check is a paid request to Google's results. A query anyone checked in the last 24 hours is served from that shared result at no cost.
