Ecommerce SEO for when the shopper asks AI first

Product data that Google’s AI and ChatGPT can use, store pages that answer shoppers’ questions, and weekly tracking of whether AI recommends your products or someone else’s.

Updated

Ecommerce SEO used to mean ranking category and product pages in Google. It still does, but shoppers now also ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Mode what to buy, and those answers are built from product data and from what the web says about you. This page is for store owners and marketers doing that work.

Key takeaways
1AI traffic to US retail sites rose 693.4% year on year in the 2025 holiday season, from a small base.
2Google's AI features draw on Merchant Center feeds and product data; its Shopping Graph holds over 60 billion listings.
3Shopify stores reach ChatGPT, AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot and Meta through agentic storefronts, on by default.
4Complete product data is table stakes. Whether AI recommends you depends on reviews and what others say.

Adobe describes the base of AI shoppers as still modest[1]; the Shopping Graph figure is Google’s[4].

What AI shopping traffic looks like

Adobe’s figures are the most consistent series. Traffic from generative AI to US retail sites rose 1,200% between July 2024 and February 2025, when AI visitors were 9% less likely to convert[2]. By the 2025 holiday season it was up 693.4% year on year[1], and in the first quarter of 2026 it rose 393%, with AI traffic in March reported to convert 42% better than other traffic[3].

On the $67 billion figure
Salesforce said AI and agents drove $67 billion of Cyber Week 2025 sales, influencing 20% of orders[14]. That is Salesforce’s own model, extrapolated from its platform data, not a count of purchases made through AI assistants.

Product data: the part you control

Google says its generative AI responses can include product listings, and that Merchant Center feeds and Google Business Profiles “can help your products and services to be visible in both AI responses and other Google Search results”[7]. Free listings can appear across Search, Maps, Gemini, YouTube, the Shopping tab, Images and Lens, though Google does not guarantee they will[8].

SEO for ecommerce product pages starts with markup. Google splits product markup in two: merchant listings for pages where people can buy, and product snippets for pages where they cannot[6]. Merchant listings need a name, image and an Offer with a price above zero and a currency, and they do not accept an AggregateOffer[5]. OpenAI’s product feed has nine required fields for discovery[13]. Check a product against both, and against OpenAI’s feed fields:

Shopify SEO in the AI era

For SEO on Shopify, the platform handles the basics. Shopify generates a sitemap automatically covering products, primary images, pages, collections and blog posts[11]. You can edit robots.txt through robots.txt.liquid, but Shopify calls it an unsupported customisation and warns that incorrect use “can result in loss of all traffic”[12], so use the robots.txt tester before you change it.

For AI shopping, Shopify’s agentic storefronts let customers discover and buy products in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta, through Shopify Catalog, and are active by default for eligible stores[9]. Shopify says this needs no separate integrations or apps[10].

Myth
A perfect feed gets my products recommended.
What is true
It makes them eligible. Recommendations still depend on reviews, price and what the web says.
Myth
AI shoppers don't buy.
What is true
In early 2025 they converted less; in 2026 Adobe reported them converting better. Check your own data.
Myth
Paying for ChatGPT ads puts my products in the answer.
What is true
OpenAI says product results are organic and ads are separate.

Questions store owners ask

What is ecommerce SEO?

Making an online store's category and product pages easy to find in search: clean product data, structured data, crawlable pages, and content that answers what shoppers ask. In 2026 it also means being in the product data that AI shopping features use, such as Google's Shopping Graph and ChatGPT's product feeds.

How do products get into AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Google says its AI responses can include product listings, and that Merchant Center feeds and Google Business Profiles can help products be visible in AI responses and other search results. Product structured data on your pages supports the same.

How do products get into ChatGPT shopping?

On Shopify, through Shopify Catalog: agentic storefronts are on by default for eligible stores and cover ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta. Other merchants can apply to OpenAI for direct product feeds. The ChatGPT Shopping guide covers the feed fields.

Is Shopify good for SEO?

It covers the basics: Shopify generates a sitemap automatically for products, collections, pages and blog posts. You can edit robots.txt through robots.txt.liquid, but Shopify calls that an unsupported customisation and warns that mistakes can lose all traffic, so change it with care.

Does AI traffic convert for online stores?

It has changed quickly. In early 2025 Adobe found AI-referred visitors 9% less likely to convert than others; in 2026 reports Adobe said AI traffic converted better than non-AI traffic. Measure your own: AI referrals can be tracked in GA4.

Can CoreCited track my products in AI answers?

It tracks the shopping questions your buyers ask, such as best running shoes for flat feet, across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI features, and records whether your brand is named and which sources are cited. It does not track ChatGPT's shopping carousel itself.
