ChatGPT Shopping: how products get into ChatGPT, and how to be one of them

How ChatGPT Shopping chooses products, what happened to Instant Checkout, how merchants get listed through Shopify or a product feed, and what to fix.

ChatGPT Shopping is ChatGPT’s product discovery layer: when someone asks what to buy, it shows product results with images, prices, reviews and links, and it can build a personalised buyer’s guide. OpenAI says these results are chosen independently and are not ads. Merchants get in through Shopify or a product feed.

For online stores, ChatGPT ecommerce is a new shelf, and OpenAI shopping features have grown fast. OpenAI says hundreds of millions of people use ChatGPT to find, understand and compare products[4], and ChatGPT had more than 900 million weekly users by February 2026[16]. This guide explains how products get picked, what changed with Instant Checkout, how to get your catalogue in, and what makes ChatGPT more likely to recommend you.

Key takeaways
1Product results in ChatGPT are not ads. OpenAI says they come from structured product data, third-party content and ChatGPT's own prior answer.
2Shopify merchants are already integrated through Shopify Catalog. Others apply at chatgpt.com/merchants and send a product feed.
3Instant Checkout launched in September 2025 and was scaled back in March 2026, when OpenAI let merchants use their own checkout.
4Keep OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt. Blocking it removes your site from ChatGPT search answers.
5Reviews and third-party coverage feed what ChatGPT says about your products, so your reputation elsewhere matters as much as your feed.

What ChatGPT Shopping is

Definition · ChatGPT Shopping
The product features inside ChatGPT that recommend and compare products, with images, prices, review summaries and merchant links, selected by ChatGPT rather than paid for.

It is not one feature but several, added over about a year:

  • Product results appear when a question is about buying something: a carousel of products with prices, images and links to merchants[1].
  • Shopping research is a guided mode that asks clarifying questions and writes a buyer’s guide[4].
  • Visual shopping, added in March 2026, lets people browse visually, upload an image to find similar items, and compare products side by side[5].
  • Checkout happens on the merchant’s own site for most products today, though Instant Checkout may still appear for some[1].

How ChatGPT picks the products it shows

OpenAI is unusually specific about this. Product results are “selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads, nor influenced by any OpenAI partnerships”[1]. It lists three inputs[1]:

What goes into a ChatGPT product result
From OpenAI's own description of shopping in ChatGPT search.
Your question and context
What you asked, plus context such as Memory and custom instructions. A product appears when ChatGPT judges it relevant to your intent.
Step 1: Your question and context. What you asked, plus context such as Memory and custom instructions. A product appears when ChatGPT judges it relevant to your intent.
Step 2: Product data. Structured metadata from first-party and third-party providers, such as price and description, plus other third-party content.
Step 3: ChatGPT's own answer. The response ChatGPT generated before it looked at any new search results, which reflects what it already knows about the category.
Step 4: Policies. OpenAI's safety standards and product policies filter what can be shown.
Step 5: Merchant ranking. When several merchants sell the same product, they are ranked on availability, price, quality, and whether they are the maker or primary seller.
Myth
Big brands pay to be shown in ChatGPT's product results.
What is true
OpenAI says product results are not ads and not influenced by partnerships. Ads are a separate, labelled unit.
Myth
ChatGPT shows the cheapest merchant first.
What is true
OpenAI says the first price shown is typically the first merchant's and may not be the lowest.
Myth
The reviews ChatGPT summarises are verified.
What is true
OpenAI says review summaries come from public websites and are not verified, and labels like 'Budget-friendly' are generated by the model.
The lists are not stable
In a study of 2,961 runs of the same prompts, SparkToro and Gumshoe found less than a 1 in 100 chance that ChatGPT returned the same list of brands twice[17]. Being recommended once is a snapshot. What you want is to be recommended consistently, which only shows up when you check the same questions repeatedly.

What happened to ChatGPT Instant Checkout

Instant Checkout launched on 29 September 2025. US users on Free, Plus and Pro could buy single items from US Etsy sellers without leaving the chat, with over a million Shopify merchants announced as coming soon[2]. It ran on the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), which OpenAI built with Stripe[3]. OpenAI said merchants paid a small fee on completed purchases, and that Instant Checkout items were not preferred in product results[2].

In March 2026 the direction changed. An OpenAI spokesperson said Instant Checkout was moving to apps[6], and OpenAI then wrote that “the initial version of Instant Checkout did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide”, so it was letting merchants use their own checkout while it focused on product discovery[5]. ACP stayed, repurposed as the way merchants share product feeds and promotions. OpenAI’s help page still mentions an Instant Checkout option for some eligible products and merchants[1].

What this means for a store
Plan for discovery, not in-chat checkout. The work that pays off is getting your products into ChatGPT’s data and making sure the product page they click through to converts.

ChatGPT shopping research

Shopping research launched on 24 November 2025 for logged-in users on Free, Go, Plus and Pro. It asks clarifying questions, then writes a personalised buyer’s guide in a few minutes, using a version of GPT-5 mini trained with reinforcement learning for shopping tasks[4]. OpenAI says its results are organic and based on publicly available retail sites, and that it may use merchant data provided through ACP. It also says chats are never shared with retailers[4].

How to sell on ChatGPT: getting your products in

There is no ChatGPT merchant account to open in the way you open a marketplace seller account. Products get in through data, by one of these routes:

You are probably already in. OpenAI says that for Shopify merchants, product data is already integrated through Shopify Catalog, with no additional work required[1].
Shopify’s “agentic storefronts” are active by default for eligible stores and cover ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta[13].

The ChatGPT product feed, field by field

OpenAI’s feed specification requires nine fields for product discovery[9]. Titles should stay within 150 characters and descriptions within 5,000. In the Google-compatible profile, a GTIN or MPN is required unless identifier_exists is set to “no”. Paste your feed’s header row to see what is missing:

Product feed field checker
Paste the header row of your product feed (CSV or TSV), or one product as JSON. It checks column names against OpenAI's nine required fields. Runs in your browser.
item_id
Your unique, stable ID for the product.
title
Product title. OpenAI recommends 150 characters at most.
description
Product description, up to 5,000 characters.
url
The product page on your site.
brand
The brand name.
seller_name
Who sells it: your store name.
image_url
The main product image.
availability
in_stock, out_of_stock, pre_order, backorder or unknown.
price
The price, with currency.
Required fields from OpenAI's product feed specification (developers.openai.com), read 26 September 2026.

How the feed is delivered [10]:

  • Full snapshot files over SFTP, at least daily. Parquet is preferred; compressed JSON Lines, CSV and TSV also work.
  • Keep file names stable. Up to 500,000 items per file shard is recommended.
  • A product that disappears from your snapshots is kept for up to 14 days.
  • An API for feeds, products and promotions lets you update between daily files; promotions can only be sent by API.
  • A Google Merchant Center-style feed is accepted, but only after OpenAI confirms it for your registered feed [9].
Products that cannot be listed
OpenAI’s guidelines exclude categories including adult content, age-restricted goods such as alcohol, nicotine and gambling, weapons, prescription-only medicines and unlicensed financial products[8].

Shopify and ChatGPT

Shopify is the easiest route in. OpenAI says Shopify merchants’ product data is already integrated through Shopify Catalog[1], and Shopify says its products are discoverable in ChatGPT with “no separate integrations, no apps, and no transaction fees”[14]. On ChatGPT, purchases complete on the merchant’s own online store, through an in-app browser[5]. If you sell on Shopify, your work is the same as everyone else’s: accurate product data, strong product pages, and a good reputation in the reviews and articles ChatGPT reads.

Measuring ChatGPT shopping traffic

ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends people through[12], and Google Analytics 4 has grouped assistants such as ChatGPT in an “AI Assistant” channel since May 2026. Visits from mobile apps can still arrive without a referrer and land in Direct, so treat the number as a floor. The guide to measuring AI traffic in GA4 covers the setup.

Traffic shows who clicked, not who saw your product recommended. To see whether ChatGPT names your products for the questions that matter, and how often, track those questions over time.

Questions people ask

What is ChatGPT Shopping?

ChatGPT Shopping is the set of product features inside ChatGPT: product results with images, prices, reviews and links when you ask about buying something, a shopping research mode that builds a personalised buyer's guide, and visual browsing and comparison. OpenAI says product results are selected independently and are not ads.

How does ChatGPT decide which products to show?

OpenAI lists three inputs: structured metadata from first-party and third-party providers (such as price and description) plus other third-party content; the answer ChatGPT generated before looking at new search results; and OpenAI's safety standards and policies. It also considers your question and context, such as Memory. For the same product sold by several merchants, it ranks them on availability, price, quality and whether the seller is the maker or primary seller.

Is ChatGPT Instant Checkout still available?

It was scaled back. OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in September 2025 with US Etsy sellers. In March 2026 it said the first version did not offer enough flexibility, and that merchants would use their own checkout while it focused on product discovery. Its help page still says an Instant Checkout option may appear for some eligible products and merchants, so it is best described as de-emphasised rather than gone.

How do I get my products on ChatGPT?

If you use Shopify, your products are already integrated through Shopify Catalog and no extra work is needed. Other merchants can apply to share a product feed through OpenAI's merchant application at chatgpt.com/merchants; onboarding is currently for approved partners. Either way, keep OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt so your pages can appear in ChatGPT search answers.

Do merchants pay to appear in ChatGPT Shopping?

Not for product results. OpenAI says they are not ads and not influenced by partnerships, and Shopify says its ChatGPT discovery channel has no transaction fees. Instant Checkout, when it launched, carried a small undisclosed fee on completed purchases. Ads in ChatGPT are separate, labelled, and started as a US test in February 2026.

What is ChatGPT shopping research?

A mode launched in November 2025 that asks clarifying questions and then produces a personalised buyer's guide in a few minutes, using a version of GPT-5 mini trained for shopping tasks. OpenAI says its results are organic, based on publicly available retail sites and merchant data provided through the Agentic Commerce Protocol, and that your chats are not shared with retailers.

What is the Agentic Commerce Protocol?

An open protocol OpenAI built with Stripe and released in September 2025. Merchants use it to share product feeds and promotions with ChatGPT, and it originally powered Instant Checkout. Since March 2026 OpenAI describes it mainly as the infrastructure for product discovery.

Does blocking GPTBot remove my products from ChatGPT?

No. GPTBot only controls whether your content is used for training. OAI-SearchBot controls whether your site can appear in ChatGPT search answers, and OpenAI says sites that block it will not be shown there. Product results also draw on feeds and third-party data, so a feed is the more direct route for products.

Are ChatGPT product reviews verified?

No. OpenAI says review summaries are based on reviews from public websites and are not verified by OpenAI, and labels such as "Budget-friendly" are generated by the model. That is one reason what reviewers say about you on other sites matters.

Is ChatGPT Shopping available outside the US?

Product results in ChatGPT search launched for all plans, including logged-out users, around the globe in April 2025. Instant Checkout was limited to US users and US merchants. Shopping research launched for logged-in users on Free, Go, Plus and Pro, with no regional limit stated.
