ChatGPT vs Google is usually framed as a race with one winner. The numbers tell a different story: the two report different units, people use them for different things, and on the one measure websites care about most, visits sent, Google is still far ahead. This post puts the official figures side by side and says what they can and cannot support.
Why the headline numbers do not compare
OpenAI said ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly active users in February 2026[1], and that users sent 2.5 billion prompts a day in July 2025[2]. Google says it sees more than 5 trillion searches a year[3], and that AI Overviews have over 2.5 billion monthly users[4]. Weekly and monthly users measure different things, and a prompt is not a search: many prompts are follow-ups, drafts or tasks. Any single ratio between these numbers would be invented.
| ChatGPT | ||
|---|---|---|
| Users | 900M weekly (Feb 2026) | AI Overviews 2.5B+ monthly; AI Mode 1B+ monthly |
| Volume | 2.5B prompts a day (Jul 2025) | 5T+ searches a year (Mar 2025) |
| Shows sources | When it searches | Always, as results; AI answers cite pages |
| Sends website visits | 2.7M across 74,752 sites (Mar 2026) | 345M across the same sites |
What people actually use each for
The best evidence on ChatGPT use comes from OpenAI’s own researchers. Between July 2024 and July 2025, seeking information grew from 14% to 24% of messages, writing fell from 36% to 24%, and practical guidance held at about 29%. They describe seeking information as “a very close substitute for web search”[5]. So roughly a quarter of ChatGPT is search-like, and the rest is something Google never did.
| Practical guidance | 29% |
|---|---|
| Seeking information | 24% |
| Writing | 24% |
On the search side, SparkToro and Datos looked at 41 sites where people search, from Google and Bing to Amazon and YouTube. Google handled 73.7% of desktop searches across them; all AI tools combined had about 3.2%[6]. Desktop only, and a single panel, but the gap is wide.
The number that matters to websites
For a site owner, the like-for-like comparison is visits. Across 74,752 websites in March 2026, Ahrefs counted about 345 million visits from Google and 2.7 million from ChatGPT[7], roughly 128 to one. Check your own:
Is ChatGPT replacing Google?
In 2024 Gartner predicted traditional search volume would fall 25% by 2026[9]. Google has since said AI features are “driving an incremental increase in Search queries overall”[8]. The better description of 2026 is not replacement but addition: more questions, asked in more places, with Google itself running two of the biggest AI search products.
Questions people ask
Chat GPT vs Google: is ChatGPT replacing Google?
Not on the evidence so far. Google reported record search queries in 2026, and across 41 search-heavy sites Google handled 73.7% of desktop searches while all AI tools combined had about 3.2%. ChatGPT is growing fast and is used differently: much of it is writing, advice and tasks, not searching.
Which is bigger, ChatGPT or Google?
They report different units. OpenAI said ChatGPT had 900 million weekly active users in February 2026; Google says it sees more than 5 trillion searches a year and that AI Overviews alone have over 2.5 billion monthly users. On website traffic, Google sent about 128 times more visits than ChatGPT across 74,752 sites in March 2026.
What do people use ChatGPT for instead of Google?
OpenAI's own research found seeking information grew from 14% to 24% of ChatGPT messages in a year, and called it a very close substitute for web search. Practical guidance was about 29% and writing 24%.
Is ChatGPT search better than Google?
They do different jobs. ChatGPT writes a single answer with citations when it searches, which suits questions that need synthesis. Google shows many results and, increasingly, its own AI answers. For finding a specific site, a product page or local information, Google is still the default for most people.
Should my business focus on ChatGPT or Google?
Both, but not equally. Google still sends most visits. ChatGPT and other assistants increasingly shape which brands buyers shortlist, often without a click. Track both: search performance in Search Console, and AI visibility by asking the assistants your buyers' questions.
